Sennen - 1997

The hexagonal building adjacent to the beach in an earlier 'Sennen Window' painting is here - a decade later - treated very differently, with other preoccupations at work inside it.

This time I chose to paint as if a blind man were inside, relying upon everything other than his optical sensation to portray the feeling of living so closely in remote space by the sea.

The series defines my response to the entirely isolated existence every day, a state I relished uniquely. The imagery is specific even though the paintings may appear abstract.

Because access to the studio was by foot. and the maximum length board I could carry was 4 ft, I joined two, three and four of these to make works of a scale to fit their gracious subject.
