Rock Triptych - 1957

When I heard I had secured a place at the Slade I joined the crew of a schooner and sailed for Athens, then, hitchhiking home through Europe, I had a taste of 'abroad' post war.

Back in Cornwall, I returned immediately to paint the rocks, high waves and turbulence of the Atlantic as it hit the underneath of cliffs all along the north coast.

Artistic social life was at that time very diverse and active throughout Penwith; in visiting many of the studios I was very aware of the work then being produced, also rivalries.

Hungry for life in the metropolis, I travelled to London to start the four years degree course after my twenty-first birthday; on the rack above me was a stack of painting, still wet.
