Mining Country - 1964

The purchase of Mining Country by Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery was a sign of recognition for me. Bernard Leach opened an exhibition of my work there three years later.

Paintings had begun to emerge that dealt with mining building from the tin and copper industries ranging along the tops of cliffs beyond Botallack, Levant and Pendeen, near St Just.

Tin mining remained in the sixties one of the most stable means of earning a livelihood in the whole St  Just area, with Geevor employing a strong work force and no end in sight.

Old and retired miners spent clear days out of doors sitting on the many benches ranged for them around the square. Sufferers of silicosis, their breathing was a noisy and painful process.
