Newlyn remains that rare and valuable phenomenon, a marvellously active fishing port not destroyed by ill-advised attempts to add unnecessary tourist facilities, or to build a marina.

I have spent the past decade in this little port, painting from a studio built in the 1920s by the Garnier family, of whom Pat is my most benign, generous and humorous landlady.

Overlooking the sea offers boundless opportunities but, being a subject open to all manner of interpretation, the hazards of excess lay submerged, ready to make this freedom perilous.

The surface of this particular board asserted itself early on as main emphasis, or even the actual subject of the painting: this preoccupation from earlier days makes a welcome return.
