Dead of Night - 1998

This painting may appear at first sight to be abstract but it is but it is a straightforward portrayal from my studio at night looking out of the window overlooking Newlyn and Mounts Bay.

I was concentrating at the time on reducing literary aspects of my work and somehow purifying it to allow a submerged emotional content to become more explicitly the subject.

Painting retains its regenerative power through ceaseless diversification; artist transmit their sensibilities in a manner impossible to predict, or to envisage except from seeing the work.

If the communication of emotion is the raison d'etre of my work, there remains another vital issue at its core, that of achieving the most aesthetic method possible to transmit experience.
