Alsia Studio

On the easel in this painting one sees a partly blank canvas; this may signify the challenge that confronts a painter each day when he has to empty his mind of all else.

Except for some encouragement, and perhaps the patronage of a few, he finds himself necessarily devoid of external assistance; no manual or guide can be of any relevance to him.

It is when enclosed within blank  walls that private thoughts of inspiration develop that may be unknown even to the artist: it is as tribute to them I make images of the studios I use.

A large proportion of the considerable energy required by an artist setting forth on a new work is absorbed by transferring his own life into the inert canvas he is about to transform.
